In 1954 Hurricane Hazel destroyed part of the barn and killed 18 of the cows. The barn was rebuilt and Richard and Robert continued the dairy until 1968, retaining the hay and grain aspect of the business.

From 1968 to 1974 Richard was employed as a warehouse manager by Heritage’s Dairy Stores, Inc. while managing the regular farm work after hours.

In 1970, a fire destroyed the entire facility, including the year’s hay and straw crops, plus many pieces of equipment. Yet again the barn was rebuilt, this time for hay and straw storage. Following the fire Richard and his brother Robert established an agricultural trucking and lime spreading business, which they operated from 1974 through 1987.

Robert went on to farm his own land, while Richard continued to manage the home farm. Richard “retired” from farming in 1991, even though he could be seen working daily. By that time, the operation had grown to approximately 700 acres, 600 rented and an additional 1,200 acres of custom work. The farm was taken over by three of Richard and Grace’s sons. Steven is on the farm full time, while his brothers Roy and Timothy maintained their day jobs. The eldest son, Clinton, also provides a helping hand when needed. Daniel, a grandson, was employed in both full and part time status while he earned his Degree in Agriculture from the University of Delaware.

In 1995 another pole barn was built to increase hay and straw storage. Additionally, two center pivot irrigation systems were installed and two 14,000-bushel grain dryer/storage bins were erected. Throughout the farm’s history family members have done all of the construction and mechanical work.

In 2001, the newest pole barn was expanded and additional farm equipment was purchased to meet the demands of an expanding hay and straw business.

In 2003, Daniel and his wife Heather approached his family about leasing land to plant a vineyard and establish a winery. An agreement was reached and in the spring of 2004, 3 acres of vines were planted and Wagonhouse Winery LLC was established. An additional ½ acre was planted in 2005 and another 1 acre in 2006. The varietals consist of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pino Gris and Chardonnay.
